PhD allowance

Published February 13, 2020

THE Sindh University, Jamshoro, has recently enhanced the allowance for PhD holders from Rs10,000 to Rs25,000 for the existing faculty members under the Sindh government notification number SO (U)/U&B/PH D-Allow/2018 dated Feb 8, 2018.

However, the retired PhD teaching staff members, who are still serving as part-time faculty and were previously drawing such allowance, have been denied payment of existing PhD allowance, leave alone allowing them a raise in allowance.

Strangely, the university syndicate has allowed PhD allowance to non-teaching employees of the varsity. The Sindh government vide its notification has clearly mentioned that the increase in allowance is to be paid to PhD qualified teachers of public sector universities, which means that such allowance is only for teaching faculty, and not for non-teaching staff.

No other public sector university has made such a decision. The irrational decision warrants the immediate attention of the Sindh chief minister and the education minister.
