LAHORE, Aug 20: Fine bowling by medium-pacers Ugsen Govender and Vaughn Philander helped the South African Academy take a 167-run lead on the first innings on the penultimate day of the second four-day match against Pakistan Academy at Qadhafi Stadium on Saturday.
Govender and Philander each returned identical figures of three for 43 as the home side was bowled out for 303 in reply to South African Academy’s 470 as the match seemed certain to end in a draw.
The substantial lead was enough to allow the visitors to enforce follow-on but skipper Francois du Plessis ruined his team’s prospects of levelling the two-match series by opting to bat again.
At stumps, South African Academy had reached 45 for one in the second innings for an overall lead of 212 runs with Plessis himself batting on 25 and Ryan Smith (15) after Thandi Tshabalala was dismissed by left-arm paceman Najaf Shah.
Resuming at 88 for two, Pakistan Academy failed to capitalise on fine contributions from Shahid Yousuf and skipper Hasan Raza, both of whom struck good half-centuries.
The diminutive Shahid made 85 off 145 deliveries with the aid of 16 boundaries while Hasan, a Test discard, scored a sedate 57. The skipper’s 154-ball knock contained nine fours.
The only worthwhile partnership was provided by the overnight pair of Shahid and Aamir Sajjad, who put on 91 in the third wicket before the latter was given leg-before-wicket to Govender for 21.
Except for Mansoor Amjad, who made 24, the rest disappointed.
