LAHORE: A recent social media footage shows a traffic warden slapping a rickshaw driver following an exchange of words with him at Regal Chowk, The Mall.

It shows some wardens on The Mall stopped an auto-rickshaw driver, later identified as Waqas, and asked him to show registration documents.

On asking the reason for presenting the documents, the wardens insisted on imposing a fine on the rickshaw driver.

This led to exchange of words between them. Meanwhile, the driver warned the wardens that he would set his rickshaw on fire if a fine was imposed on him.

The footage also showed one of the traffic wardens, later identified as sector in charge Akbar, slapping the driver, as his two colleagues attempt to block the camera view with their umbrellas.

The wardens later took the driver to the local police station along with his rickshaw to lodge a complaint against him.

A spokesperson for the city traffic police said the chief traffic officer (CTO) has taken notice of the incident and directed traffic SP Hammad Raza to hold an inquiry into it.

He said action would be taken against traffic wardens if allegations of abuse of power proved true.
