RAWALPINDI, Aug 17: As many as 128 polling stations out of 1,645 have been declared sensitive in the Rawalpindi district where voting for the local government elections will be held on August 25, security sources said on Wednesday.

The reason for giving these polling stations the sensitive status was their previous history. Out of them, 61 polling stations have been put in category A while the rest in B.

In category A poling stations, clashes had taken place in the previous local bodies election, and there are chances of trouble during the forthcoming polling.

The sources said six sensitive polling stations in category A were in the jurisdiction of Gunjmandi police, where political conflict between the workers of Badshah Mir Khan Afridi and Haider Zaman Kiani had occurred during the last local bodies elections.

Similarly, tension prevails between Mohammad Riaz, an ex- nazim, and his opponent. Clashes between the PPP and JI workers and PML and JI had taken place in the constituency.

Two polling stations have been declared sensitive in Pirwadhai area where a clash had taken place between nazim Shahid Latif and Ghulam Ali Khan. They are also contesting elections this year.

Likewise, eight polling stations have been placed on the sensitive status list in the Waris Khan area where clashes had been reported between Sajid Khan, a naib nazim, Riaz Khan of PML- N and Farooq Paracha and his opponent group during previous local bodies polls.

Sanaullah Qadri, the deputy secretary JI, and an activist of Sheikh Rashid group have been facing a murder case in the area.

Two polling stations have been declared sensitive in the city area where political unrest prevails between Raja Mushtaq Ahmed, an ex-nazim, and Malik Shakeel Awan.

Four polling stations have been declared sensitive in the jurisdiction of New Town, while seven in Sadiqabad police area where security agencies believe that law and order situation can arise as candidates backed by the PPP, JI and PML-Q are contesting the polls. Political differences between Faizul Hassan Chohan, MPA, and Raza Ahmed Shah, an ex-nazim exist in the area.

Similarly, four polling stations have been declared sensitive in the jurisdiction of Airport police where it is feared that a clash between the supporters of Chaudhry Tanveer Khan, an ex-MPA, and Mohammad Basharat Raja, provincial law minister, can take place.

Three polling stations have been declared sensitive in the Saddar Berooni area while five in Chontra area where tension prevails between the supporters of Chaudhry Nisar Ali Khan, MNA, and Chaudhry Kamran Aslam, MPA.

Four polling stations have been declared sensitive in Taxila and as many in Wah where a clash had taken place between the supporters of Chaudhry Nisar and Ghulam Sarwar Khan during previous elections.
