LONDON: Tonight [Dec 12] the fate of the Churchill Government hangs on one word. The Labour Party Executive is drafting a resolution regretting the situation that has arisen in Greece and asking for immediate measures to end the conflict, and create conditions under which a new and representative Government can be elected.

This draft has not satisfied two of the big Trade Union Engineers and Railwaymen. They want to substitute for the word ‘regret’ that the Labour Party Conference ‘deplores’ events in Greece. This change, however, is interpreted by Labour Ministries as expressing direct censure of the Government of which they are members.

It is believed they have stated that should this resolution be carried by the Conference they would be compelled to resign from Mr. Churchill’s Government. Tonight there is feverish activity in the Executive in an effort to iron out the difference between the unions on the one hand and labour ministers on the other.

The B.B.C. Correspondent in Athens said that Field Marshal Alexander is in Athens. He is accompanied by Harold Macmillan and had discussions with General Scobie.
