ABBOTTABAD: Over 200 graduates were awarded degrees in eight disciplines during the 53rd convocation at the College of Physicians and Surgeons of Pakistan (CPSP) here on Sunday.

Surgeon General of Pakistan Lt-Gen Khawar Rehman gave away the degrees to the doctors from Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, Punjab, Islamabad, Azad Kashmir and Gilgit-Baltistan.

CPSP regional director Prof Jehangir Khan and acting president Khalid Masood Gondal also spoke on the occasion. They said under the leadership of Prof Zafarullah Chaudhry, CPSP had become one of the best institutes recognised worldwide.

“CPSP has progressed tremendously over the last 15 years and has become a symbol of recognition and integrity of the country,” said Khawar Rehman, adding more than 24,000 fellows and 10,000 members of the college were playing their role in healthcare service delivery across the country.

He continued: “Around 24,000 trainee doctors will bridge the gap of medics in future.

The CPSP is sending its doctors to Ireland and the UK for practical training and exposure to world class institutions. These trainees will surely serve the nation on their return.”

Prof Khalid Masood, senior vice-president of CPSP, administered the oath to the new fellows and members.

He expressed the hope that the new fellows and members would spend their lives in serving the humanity as per their oath.

The surgeon general praised the meritorious services and achievements of the college. He declared it an exemplary institution.

CPSP gold medals were also given to the best among the graduates.

Council member Prof Jehangir Khan, who was the chief organiser of the convocation, talked about the ethics of the profession and urged new specialist doctors to serve ailing people.

He congratulated the CPSP organising committee for making the event a success.
