Engineering goods export

Published August 12, 2005

KARACHI, Aug 11: Engineering Development Board (EDB) has embarked upon a plan to enhance engineering goods exports, which globally have a share of over 63 per cent of the world trade.

The EDB plans to review production procedure of these goods to ensure that products could match world standards and should be second to none in quality. Another factor, which needs government attention, was cost which would also play a major role in enhancing share in world market.

Therefore, the EDB would initiate saving measures to make the engineering goods competitive.

To make engineering products cost effective the EDB would have to undertake tariff and non-tariff related issues as they have direct bearing on the cost of inputs. The third and the foremost important factor is to ensure that all commitments are fulfilled without any break and to the entire satisfaction of world customers.

This was stated by general manager (Karachi) EDB Shahid Zubair in a response to some of the points raised by the President of Union of Small and Medium Enterprises (Unisame) Zulfikar Thaver for the development of SMEs.

The EDB would also identify management and marketing flaws in individual organizations that can be filled by training programmes with the objective of brining each selected SME to a basic world level. It will also prepare and select SMEs to participate in trade fairs in the country and aboard.

In this connection the EDB will survey and hold meetings with trade bodies, particularly of SMEs to discuss with them the plan of enhancing engineering products share in the world market.
