MIRPURKHAS, Aug 9: One person was killed and another was injured in a scuffle between supporters of the Khushal Pakistan Panel and the Awam Dost Panel in the Babu Shah village, Hussain Bux Mari taluka, on Monday.

The dispute followed playing of objectionable audio cassettes. The rival groups resorted to aerial firing in which Mohammad Soomar, the driver of Ghulam Mohammad Shah alias Babu Shah, a KPP candidate for the seat of nazim of Old Mirpur, sustained bullet injuries. He was taken to the Mirpurkhas Civil Hospital from where he was shifted to the Hyderabad Civil Hospital where he died.

A group of people later gathered there and beat up Ghulam Haider Narejo, a supporter of an ADP candidate. He was admitted to the Mirpurkhas Civil Hospital.

On Tuesday, protesters carrying the body of Mr Soomar reached the Khipro Naka Chowk from the Babu Shah village. They staged a sit-in and blocked Mirpurkhas-Umerkot and Mirpurkhas-Sanghar roads for one hour.

A heavy contingent of police was deployed to avert any untoward incident.

Police registered a murder case on a complaint of Ghulam Mohammad against Ghulam Haider Narejo, former nazim, Yameen Narejo, and ADP candidate Hajan Panwhar.

Mr Narejo was arrested and remanded in police custody for six days by the judicial magistrate.
