PESHAWAR, Aug 7: Residents of the federal government Employees Colony, near the Wapda House on Shami Road, have been facing a number of problems for the last two months due to frequent power transformer breakdowns.
The residents held a meeting at the colony on Sunday and discussed ways to have the electricity supply restored, which was cut off after the power transformer stopped working on Thursday night.
They agreed that they would restore the power supply themselves as the Wapda and PWD staff did not pay attention to their problems. They said that the responsibility would rest with the officials concerned if any untoward incident happened while they tried to restore the electricity supply.
The women and children were facing severe difficulties in the absence of electricity and water as temperature and humidity had risen, they said.
On Friday, the residents had taken out a procession along the Canal Road, near the Wapda House, and marched to the Federal Lodges on Shami Road to apprise the superintendent engineer of the Public Works Department (PWD), Wazir Zada, of their difficulties and seek his help.
They told him that the frequent power breakdowns during the past two months had made life miserable for them.
The employees said that whenever they approached PWD officials they excused themselves by saying that it was not their duty to remove electricity faults and Wapda staff were seldom available to attend to their complaints.
They claimed that Wapda officials shrugged their responsibility saying it was the duty of the PWD to ensure an uninterrupted power supply to the colony.
The residents had also held a meeting with the PWD executive engineer, Kifayatullah, and requested him to have the transformer replaced but in vain.
They had complaints about disconnection of gas supply during the winter.
“The winter nights became unbearable when the gas supply was disconnected early in the night,” they said.
They appealed to the authorities concerned to resolve their problems as soon as possible.
