KARACHI, Aug 7: Federal Minister for Labour, Manpower and Overseas Pakistanis Ghulam Sarwar Khan has impressed upon officers of the Employees’ Oldage Benefits Institution (EOBI) to play their due role in ensuring achievement of the institution’s objectives through successful delivery of its subscribers’ rights.

He was speaking as chief guest at a ceremony organized by the EOBI Officers’ Association of Pakistan here on Saturday night in honour of the new EOBI chairman, Brig (r) Akhtar Zamin Khan, and the retired officers of the institution.

The minister underlined the need for an efficient team work to achieve the set targets. Everyone working on a given position should evaluate his performance each day to see whether he delivered or not and then set further goals, he added.

“We all talk about our rights without giving any regard to the performance that is required from us to do justice with the role we are entrusted with,” he observed.

Welcoming the new chairman, he described Brig Zamin as an energetic officer who had served in challenging circumstances in the past and, he hoped, would perform with greater confidence in future for the best interest of this institution.

He assured the new chairman of his full cooperation with regard to the betterment of the institution as well as its officers and other employees.

Referring to the institution’s record, he said the same should be maintained more efficiently and its statistics in a more transparent manner.

He also underscored the need for bringing down the institution’s running expenses.

The minister particularly mentioned the plight of contract employees who, he said, were the most unprivileged, not having access to even some basic rights. He called for legislation in order to protect their rights.

Mr Ghulam Sarwar Khan announced setting up of a three-member committee to identify the problems being faced by EOBI officers and gave it one month to put forward the same to him. He held out the assurance that all their genuine problems would be solved at the earliest.

Speaking on the occasion, Brig Zamin pledged to make the EOBI a dynamic and vibrant institution.

Later, shields and gifts were distributed among the on-job and retired EOBI officer in recognition of their outstanding services.
