KARACHI, Aug 6: Sindh Governor Ishratul Ibad on Saturday laid foundation of six projects in Lyari. Talking to journalists on the occasion, he said the past governments had not paid due attention to the uplift of Lyari due to which people of the area were facing problems.

He added that the government was now taking steps for the betterment of Lyari. In this regard, various development schemes had been started at a cost of Rs432 million.

He said these projects included uplift schemes of water supply, sewerage disposal and construction of roads.

To a question, he said his visit was not related to any election campaign, but he had been giving serious attention to the uplift of city since the last two years.

He said that he would continue to visit the city and inspect development works.

Ibad laid the foundation stone of Sheedi Village Road (Tannery Road Phase-II) from 8-Chowk to Lea Market Tonga Stand. The Rs12.86-million project would be completed in 12 months.

He also laid the foundation of repair work of Chakiwara Road from New Kumharwara to Parap Chard Nullah, and the Denso Road from Aath Chowk to Chakiwara Road. The Rs16.9m project would be completed in nine months.

Later, the foundation of repair work on D Road from Shah Abdul Latif Bhitai Road to Tannery Road was laid. The Rs2 million project would be completed in six months.

The governor also laid the foundation of Haji Pir Muha-mmad Road from Shah Abdul Latif Bhitai Road to Aath Chowk. The project would be completed in six months.

The foundation stone for the renovation of Faqir Muhammad Dara Khan Road from Mirza Adam Khan Road to Jameela Street was also laid. The Rs16.8m project would be completed by March 2006. Besides, he laid the foundation stone of the improvement of Chakiwara Road-New Kumharwara Road.

He also reviewed the sanitary conditions of the area and ordered that they be improved. He also instructed that streetlights should be kept in order and working should continue on uplift schemes round the clock.

DESALINATION: Work on one of the three proposed desalination plants to be set up in Karachi will start by next month, while 25 per cent of water supply from the plant will start by the end of this year. — PPI/APP
