LAHORE: An employee of the Child Protection and Welfare Bureau (CPWB) was suspended from service and arrested for sexual abuse of an 11-year-old child after an inquiry found him guilty.

Mughalpura police registered a case against the suspect, U, an attendant in hostel, on complaint of hostel in-charge Zafar Iqbal.

A brother of the suspect told Dawn his brother was being falsely accused over ‘personal enmity’. “There is no proof of his wrongdoing. On the other hand, the in-charge (Zafar Iqbal) was earlier accused of stealing various commodities from CPWB,” he said.

ASI Ziaullah, the investigating officer in the case, said the suspect had been moved to jail on judicial remand and the facts would come out during trial. He said the child, in his statement before the court, had made it clear that the suspect had not touched him but he was ‘sleeping in the same room’ where many others were also present.

The CPWB authorities maintain that during their inquiry, the child had given a statement – albeit not on audio or video – that the man had tried to come close to him a few times before.

CPWB DG Faiz Naeem Warraich told Dawn he had called the police as soon as the inquiry committee found the suspect guilty.
