KARACHI: A police officer was suspended on Wednesday over “inhuman treatment and torture” of an accused individual in police custody whose video went viral on social media, prompting IGP Sindh to take its notice, according to officials.

“Malir SSP has suspended the police officer allegedly involved in torture of the suspect inside police lock-up,” said a police spokesperson.

Two days ago, the suspect, identified as Javed, was arrested by Gadap police as over one kilogramme charas was recovered from his custody and FIR (No 203/2019) was registered against him.

Apart from suspending the assistant sub-inspector, Rab Nawaz, the Malir SSP has also ordered inquiry against him to be carried out by Gadap SP.

The inquiry officer has been directed to submit his report within next two days.

Earlier, IGP Sindh Dr Syed Kaleem Imam took notice of “inhuman treatment and torture” of the accused in Gadap police station, which was shown on social media.

He sought a detailed inquiry report from the Malir SSP along with all necessary departmental action against the police, said the spokesperson.
