THIS refers to the article ‘Love of English’ (Aug 2). The writer has pinpointed some drawbacks in our educational system. Broadly speaking, the author hints at the inability of policymakers to devise effective policies for ensuring proper schooling.
I think education should enlighten individuals to realise their potential. Considering this as a yardstick, we can better decide where our educational system stands. We are producing ‘babus’ or ‘intellectually stunted’ professionals through nearly a century-old colonial way of education.
We better get rid of this system where degrees are acquired as a means to secure jobs.
The procedures and standards for recruitment of teachers, especially at primary levels, may be revised. There must be regular training sessions after six months for teachers to equip them with updated teaching techniques.
Lastly, but most importantly, arrangements should be made to encourage critical thinking among students. It is time to shun the existing approach that students know nothing.
