KARACHI: Pakistan Awami League yesterday [Aug 13] demanded that elections be held immediately to allow the people’s representatives to frame a new constitution for the country in six months. The Central Organising Committee meeting of the party passed a number of resolutions demanding release of political prisoners, students and others, implementation of the Krupps flood control programme for East Pakistan and reiterating its six points. Sheikh Mujibur Rehman, the party chief, presided over the meeting. He is returning to Dacca this morning. The Central Organising Committee also announced a nine-member Sub-Committee to finalise the party manifesto by Sept. 30.

Meanwhile, in a statement issued yesterday, Sheikh Mujibur Rehman pleaded for early polls to enable the elected representatives of the people to tackle “the multiplying problems of peasants, workers, students and overwhelming multitude of toiling masses”.

The Awami League chief said: “The people of Pakistan must exercise their sovereignty, through democratic institutions, in order to find acceptable and lasting solutions to all their problems, constitutional or otherwise...” — Agency
