GUJRANWALA, July 27: One of the accused in the US journalist Daniel Pearl’s murder case has been arrested by the Gujranwala police. Sources told this correspondent that Syed Mohammad Hashim, carrying a head-money of Rs1 million announced by the Sindh government, was arrested on Tuesday from Chand ka Qila bypass when he was on board a wagon.
He was produced before area magistrate Malik Azmat on Wednesday, who sent him on judicial remand. Pearl was kidnapped from Lahore in January 2002 and later found murdered in Karachi. The Sindh police registered the murder case against five people, including Hashim. Four of the accused, including Ahmad Umar Sheikh, have been convicted.
Hashim is said to be the man who introduced Pearl to Umar. Said to be a member of Harkatul Mujahideen, Hashim belongs to Chacha Wati village in the Ahmadpur East area of Bahawalpur district. He was declared as an ‘Afghan war martyr’ by his family four years ago.
