KARACHI: Former Pakistan captain Rashid Latif on Thursday said that the national cricket selection committee should have individuals from all formats.

Talking to media here, the former gloveman maintained that a heavyweight as chief selector is not a guarantee of desired results.

“Why has there been no Twenty20 player in the [national] selection committee? Other than the regional quota, the national selection committee should have former players from different formats,” Rashid said.

The 50-year-old Rashid, who has moved to Islamabad, was in Karachi for a couple of days for personal engagements. During his stay in the metropolis, the veteran of 37 Tests and 166 ODIs attended only training camp of U-19 players at National Stadium’s High Performance Centre, and imparted tips to youngsters in a three-hour session.

After addressing the press conference as the honorary president of the Pakistan Disabled Cricket Association (PDCA), Rashid also touched upon the reportedly proposed new domestic structure, saying that a system should be strong enough to stay intact and function in the long run.

“[Proposed] closure of departmental cricket [by the PCB] will have adverse effects on other sports too as why would the organisations continue with other sports teams if they are found to be not financially viable,” Rashid opined. “A robust and long-standing system should be established which will not be dependent on individuals at the helm.”
