HARIPUR: A teenage boy drowned in Khanpur Dam here on Sunday, police and witnesses said.

SHO Khanpur Ehjaz Khan said that despite ban on swimming and bathing in all water bodies of Haripur, some youngsters from Islamabad were bathing in the plunge pool area (several feet deep pond beneath the spillway), when one of them drowned.

The police with the help of local divers fished the body out and shifted it to the tehsil headquarters hospital, Khanpur.

The deceased was identified as Hammad Umar, 14, a resident of Islamabad. It was the second drowning incident in Khanpur reservoir during last three days.

Meanwhile, a prisoner died of heart attack in Haripur central jail, police and jail sources said on Sunday.

They said Bagheecha Gul, 65, of Khyber tribal district was undergoing life imprisonment in the jail. On Saturday night, he suffered pain in the chest and was shifted to jail hospital but could not survive. Jail doctors confirmed that the cause of death was cardiac arrest.

The body was later handed over to his family after legal proceedings, the jail sources said.

Meanwhile, a woman on Sunday attempted to commit suicide by consuming pesticides, but her timely shifting to the Haripur Trauma Centre helped the doctors wash her stomach. She was later admitted to the district headquarters hospital, where her condition was out of danger.

According to the woman’s father, a resident of Naseem Town, his daughter took the extreme step after an altercation with her mother.
