LAHORE, July 20: All seeded players qualified for the pre- quarterfinals of the 8th All Pakistan Ameer Abdullah Khan Rokri badminton tournament on Wednesday. Top seed Wajid Ali got a useful practice while ousting Imran Laeeq in straight games 15-13, 15-10. Former national champion Aamir Islam faced little opposition from Aliuz Zaman before romping home 15-13, 15- 8.
Another seasoned campaigner Ashraf Masih needed three games to overcome the challenge of spirited Rizwan Rana 15-11, 7-15, 15-4. Ashraf trailed 9-7 in the first game but recovered his poise with the help of fine smashing and excellent court coverage. But he made a number of unforced errors in the second game, allowing Rizwan to make it 1-1.
Ashraf, however, regained his composure in the third and never allowed Rizwan any chance of causing an upset with his all-round court craft. In another three game match, Atif Nadeem had to work hard to overcome Rizwan 4-15, 15-8, 15-3.
Atif was erratic in the beginning and lost the first game but, he soon regained control over his game in the next two games to emerge worthy winner.
Ahsan Qamar, who recently won gold medal in the individual event of Nepal Satellite, did not turn up, giving Akram Masih a walk over.
The men and women’s doubles matches also started and would continue throughout the night.
