Global warming

IT CANNOT be denied that environmental degradation is a reality. Of course, I’m not talking about some stubborn world leaders when I say this. But our environment is severely impacted by our decisions.

It is estimated that at the end of this century, global temperature will have risen by 3°c to 4°c. It doesn’t seem like much but in the last century the global temperature only rose around 0.8°c. Countries such as Pakistan, which are still developing, are the nations which will suffer the most from the effects of environmental degradation as we are ill-equipped to deal with the disasters this will bring about. Look at the recent floods in Pakistan which displaced millions of people. The country is slowly decaying in terms of the environment and, if attention is not paid soon, it will be too late.

I urge the prime minister and officials concerned to take note of this issue and find a remedy as soon as possible. A ‘Ministry for Environment’ should be set up so that it can view the different environmental issues in Pakistan and help in providing sustainable solutions to the problems.
