LAHORE: Railways Minister Sheikh Rashid says Opposition Leader in National Assembly Shahbaz Sharif has returned home at the time of the hectic budget session to avoid his arrest.

“Mr Sharif will try to escape again soon after the assembly session,” he said.

Speaking to journalists at the Lahore railway station on Sunday, the minister claimed that Mr Sharif was here to create another “drama” during the budget session and escape again. “It was a great blunder to let Shahbaz Sharif become the opposition leader in the National Assembly,” he said.

He said the style of politics of Nawaz Sharif and Shahbaz Sharif was different. The PML-N was under the influence of Nawaz Sharif while Shahbaz Sharif had no say in his party, he said.

Mr Rashid said the opposition lacked ingredients to launch any mass protest movement against the incumbent government. “Anything is possible but the government of Nawaz Sharif or Asif Zardari will not be formed in Pakistan,” he added.

The railways minister said escalators worth Rs120 million were being installed at the Lahore railway station to facilitate old people.

“After 70 years, the government is going to spruce up the Lahore railway station to match the magnanimity of the city,” he said.

The previous governments, he regretted, did not even spend a penny on the development of the railway station and added “only commission-makers misappropriated public money”. He said 100,000 or so passengers daily visit the railway station and every platform would have its separate waiting area.

The minister inaugurated a newly-constructed waiting hall built over 3,000 square feet for easy stay of at least 250 passengers at any time. The waiting area has all the required facilities for the passengers.

The minister, along with the CEO Railways, DS Railways and other officers, visited the Washing Lines and inspected the standard of washing of trains as well as trains’ arrival and return to the station. He also met labourers working over there and listened to their problems.
