Superstore badly damaged in fire

A huge fire broke out in the basement of a superstore in Gulistan-i-Jauhar, which badly damaged it. The blaze was put out after hectic efforts of several hours because there was no access to the location of the fire, officials said.

A fire brigade official said that the blaze erupted in the basement of the Bin Hashim supermarket at 9.58am on Tuesday.

The fireman said that they sent six fire tenders and a snorkel, which managed to extinguish the blaze early on Wednesday morning. However, the cooling work continued into the evening.

The fire official said that they faced immense difficulty in getting access to the basement of the store as only a narrow passage led to it.

The official said that the fire had badly damaged the superstore but the estimate of the loss and cause of the fire could not be made immediately.

Till Wednesday evening, fire brigade officials were trying to drain out the water from the basement as it was filled with it.

Gulistan-i-Jauhar SHO Shakeel Shervani said that the fire was completely put out at around 4am on Wednesday. Since there was smoke emanating from the basement, fire tenders continued their efforts the whole day.

The officer said the police were waiting for a final report from both the fire brigade and the Sindh Building Control Authority about the cause of the fire and damage to the building. It is a five-storey residential building where the superstore is situated on the mezzanine floor.
