Eight killed in roof collapse incidents

CHARSADDA/MARDAN: Eight people were killed in two roof collapse incidents in Charsadda and Mardan districts on Tuesday.

Aisha and her two minor children, Salma and Ismail, were killed in Sheikhano Bari area of Charsadda’s Tangi tehsil when the roof of the room in which they slept caved in early on Tuesday.

The children’s grandmother passed away after learning about the deaths.

Another minor family member, Omama, suffered injuries in the incident before he was shifted to Jamalabad hospital in Harichand area.

The residents recovered bodies and injured people from under the rubble.

The assistant commissioner of Tangi area visited the family to condole deaths and said proper compensation would be given away to them to mitigate their sufferings.

In Takhtbai tehsil of Mardan district, four people, including a couple and their grandson and granddaughter, were killed when the roof of a house collapsed in Qudratabad area early on Tuesday.

Officials of the Rescue 1122 and residents told Dawn that the roof of a rented mud house collapsed when the family was asleep.

The deceased included Thoor Mohammad, 60, his 50-year-old wife, 10-year-old granddaughter Badroduja and six-month-old grandson Mohammad Abbas.

Mohammad Bilal Jalal, a spokesperson for Recues 1122 said the rescue officials recovered bodies from under the rubble and shifted them to the Takhtbai tehsil headquarters hospital for necessary medico-legal work.

He said the roof collapsed due to dilapidated condition and that the family was too poor to repair or rebuild it.

District nazim Ihtesham Khan also visited the family and condoled deaths.
