LAHORE: A number of voluntary social welfare agencies in West Pakistan have expressed grave concern over the series of Press statements and the resolutions of the West Pakistan Conference of Social Work, which are reported to have been passed in the last few days against the Social Welfare Council.

The West Pakistan Blind Welfare Association, the Provincial T.B. Association, the Pakistan Anjuman-i-Islam-i-Muashra, the Anjuman Huqooq-o-Faraiz-i-Insan and a few other voluntary welfare agencies, on Tuesday [April 29] condemned the demand for the bureaucratic control over the voluntary social welfare agencies.

They said that the pre-Martial Law disturbances were on account of the resentment of the people against bureaucratic controls and interferences and, therefore, it was strange that some spokesman of social workers were inviting the Government to subject voluntary social work to such stringent measures.

[Meanwhile, as reported by an agency in Dacca,] The Martial Law Administrator, Zone B, has sanctioned Rs 1,00,000 for distribution among the students of tornado-affected areas for the purchase of books. The money has been granted to enable the students who have lost their books and are not in a position to procure them again.
