APROPOS the news item in Dawn (April 14) about the ambitious programme proposed by the guardians of Frere Hall for restoration. I am an old Karachiite and welcome this initiative. I am sure this will be a great landmark for the city.
The people need to see our heritage. We have so many sights that we can restore and show with pride, particularly in old city areas like Saddar, Burns Road and Soldier Bazar.
I would also like to compliment Citizens-Police Liaison Committee’s Jameel Yusuf for his suggestion to call Karachi a city of love and care instead of the city of lights. He is correct when he suggests that Karachi is a city which has given love to all who are here.

The people of Karachi, owe a deep gratitude for those who conceived and built the Frere Hall, as indeed planning and layout of the city. Mr. Chris Roberts in his comment has reminded us of those involved. Henry Saint Clair Wilkins was the designer of the Frere Hall, the hall is named after Sir Henry Bartle Frere. Sir William Hamo Thorneycroft (1850-1925) was the sculptor of Queen Victoria's statue now very sadly lying in pieces at the Mohatta Palace. If only the Gardens are kept green and the Queen Victoria's statue restored to its original state, would be a welcome sight for us citizens. We as a nation do not care about our heritage at all, we have renamed roads, streets, cities, towns, effectively erasing our past heritage. We build but do not maintain, so if anything at all is to be built it has to be maintained and that really is the issue.
