(EDITORIAL) The rank-and-file M.P. seems determined to tilt lances with Mr. Churchill notwithstanding the Premier’s recent display of the heavy hand to squash all opposition to his domestic policy. Under the generic discussion of rates of pay for jobs, the issue of equal pay for men and women who perform identical tasks is sought to be raised anew in the House of Commons. Mr. Churchill’s answer to the demand for an inquiry has been not merely laconic, but almost Machiavellian when he left it to Mr. Eden as Leader of the House to find necessary time for discussion during the present session. The Foreign Secretary … can neither satisfy dissentients of the policy of the Government nor raise his own stock in Parliament so long as Mr. Churchill gives little indication of resiling from his aggressive display of power.…

The Prime Minister, safe in the assurance that none other can lead the nation in war, has succeeded in imposing his veto on progressive expressions of opinion on purely domestic issues and the surrender of judgement on the part of Labour leaders must discredit their standing with the public. Such insidious undermining of democratic traditions according to the Churchillian creed of authority bodes ill for Britain….
