KARACHI, Oct 14: A dentist and a security guard were shot dead in the city on late Saturday night and Sunday.
Unidentified assailants shot a dentist to death in New Karachi on late Saturday night.
The police said that Dr Mohammed Iqbal, aged 40, a dentist, riding on motorcycle, was on his way home after closing his clinic in Sector 5-C/2 in New Karachi. When he reached Sector 11-C, two unknown armed men, who were also riding on a motorcycle, intercepted him in a narrow street. They opened fire on him and escaped. He was rushed to Abbasi Shaheed Hospital where doctors pronounced him dead on arrival.
Iqbal’s brother had lodged a case against unknown assailants at the area police station, the police said.
Unidentified persons shot a private security guard of a petrol pump to death in Surjani Town on Sunday.
The police said that three unknown assailants, riding on a motorcycle, came to a petrol pump in Sector 5-D, on the main road in Surjani Town. After getting their motorcycle filled with petrol, one of the assailants walked up to the security guard, Pir Mohammed, aged 58, who was sitting a few yards away from the filling place, pumped two bullets into his body and escaped.
The police suspected personal enmity to be a possible motive behind the killing, as the assailants did not touch the cashier of the petrol pump.
The security guard died on the spot. The body was sent to Abbasi Shaheed Hospital for post-mortem.
DIE: A boy who had been injured in a clash with the police at Kalapul on Oct 4 died in a hospital on late Saturday night.
Rajab Ali, a teenager, was wounded during a clash with law-enforcement agencies at Kalapul. The clash occurred after the funeral of six Namazis who had been shot dead at an Imambargah in Mehmoodabad on Oct 4. He was admitted to an ICU in Jinnah Post-graduate Medical Centre and was later shifted to a private hospital where he died.
A man was found dead in a vacant house in Saeedabad on Sunday night.
The police said that the Naib Nazim of the area informed the police about the body lying in a house on Waqas Road in Saeedabad. The police had not ascertained the man’s identity and cause of death till our going to the press.
CARJACKING: Eight vehicles — five cars and three motorcycles — were either hijacked or stolen in the city on Sunday, the police said.
Two cars were hijacked in Boat Basin and Defence. Three others were stolen in Gulshan-i-Iqbal (two) and Brigade.
The motorcycles were hijacked in Gulshan-i-Iqbal, Korangi Industrial Area, and New Karachi. The police also claimed on Sunday to have recovered five vehicles in the city.
FIRE: A fire broke out in a room at Sindh Institute of Urology and Transplantation (SIUT), Civil Hospital, on Sunday.
A spokesman for the fire department said that the fire was caused due to an electric short circuit which caused damage to false ceiling sheets, discarded linen, bottles and jars.
A statement issued by SIUT said that no harm came to any patient facilities or any other parts of the Institute which were functioning normally. The governing body of SIUT had ordered an inquiry into the fire, the statement added.
