Saudi investment

Published February 22, 2019

THE Saudi announcement of investment in Balochistan’s energy sector is an opportunity for the government to undo past wrongs.

Previous regimes with a colonial mindset committed grave blunders in running state-owned oil and gas companies in Balochistan, alienating the local population by disregarding their well-being, resulting in massive discontent.

The gas companies’ management had exclusive rights over the Sui airport for their travel, whereas the local children wore plastic bags on their feet, because slippers were beyond their financial reach.

Ironically, the areas from where natural gas is extracted are the most unde- developed regions of Pakistan. They have no worthwhile schools, colleges and hospitals. Even basic amenities are not easily available.

On the other hand, the exploration companmies’ employees live in camps that have every facility.

Considering the above-mentioned facts, this government should take measures to gain the trust of the Baloch by ensuring that the Saudi investment in Balochistan translates into long-term structural development of the province.
