RATNAGIRI: A gang of about 25 persons, believed to be dacoits, raided the special police camp at Sakharpa on the Ratnagiri-Kohlapur road at the foot of the Ambaghat and assaulted the police resulting in serious injuries to a sub-inspector and four constables including three armed constables. Although the police are said to have inflicted some stock blows and bayonet wounds on some of the assailants, the latter made good their escape. The sub-inspector was severely belaboured with lathis in an attempt to rob him of his revolver, which proved futile. All the injured policemen have been taken to the Government hospital at Devrukh. The same gang is reported to have broken open a liquor shop at Sakharpa and poured out the whole stock of liquor in the shop. The District Superintendent of police has proceeded to Sakharpa and a vigorous search for the raiders is being carried on.

[Meanwhile, as reported from Lahore,] an incident occurred in the Lahore zoo yesterday [Feb 13] when a lion freeing himself from the cage ran out and pounced upon Balwa, the keeper of the zoo. After mauling him badly the beast rushed towards the office of the curator. An alarm was sounded and the visitors ran helter-skelter. — Dawn Delhi
