KARACHI: Two processions were taken out by women in Karachi yesterday [Feb 12] in support of the demand for end of emergency laws, restoration of democracy, release of political and student leaders, and freedom of Press, etc.
The first procession was taken out in the morning in Liaquatabad. It dispersed peacefully after parading through the main roads of the township and a brief public meeting. The second procession was taken out by the Khwateen Action Committee from the Mazar of Madar-i-Millat in the afternoon. It paraded through Bunder Road, Victoria Road, Elphinstone Street and terminated at the Regal bus stop. It was organised by Begum Saadi Zamir, an Opposition Councillor in the KMC and the convener of the committee. Both processions were participated in by women from different walks of life including students, journalists, house-wives, teachers, etc.
The Liaquatabad procession ended with a public meeting at which a resolution was passed affirming support for the eight demands of the DAC. It demanded release of all Opposition leaders and workers and urged action against the Police officials of Liaquatabad Police Station and compensation to the sufferers of the disturbances. It also called upon the BDs of Liaquatabad to immediately tender their resignations.
