KARACHI, July 2: An anti-terrorism court put off on Saturday the hearing of the corps commander’s convoy attack case after recording the statement of a judicial magistrate. The judge fixed July 18 for the next hearing after the statement of JM Lubna Yousuf, who was also cross-examined by defence counsel M R Syed.

Ataur Rehman alias Ibrahim, Shahzad Ahmed Bajwah, Yaqoob Saeed, Uzair Ahmed, Shoiab Siddiqui, Danish Inam, Najeebullah, Khurrum Saifullah, Shahzad Mukhtar, Khalid Rao and Adnan Shah alias Tipu have been charged with a series of offences, including attack on the motorcade of Lt-Gen Ahsan Saleem Hayat on June 10 last year on the old Clifton bridge, which resulted in the death of six army personnel, three policemen and a passer-by.

Mohammed Qasim, Maaz, Shahab, Bilal, Tayyeb, Hammad and Fasih have been declared absconders.

JM Lubna Yousuf stated before the court that she had conducted the identification parade of accused Adnan Shah, who was duly identified by prosecution witnesses, Constable Ghulam Farooq and Shrafat Zaman.

BAIL GRANTED: The additional district and sessions judge, South, Farzana Anver Shah, granted bail to former nazim of Orangi Town nazim in a case pertaining to attempt to murder.

The judge gave Mohammed Shahid Alam, better known as Guddu Bihari, bail in the sum of Rs75,000 in the case registered by the Clifton police in 2000.

The town nazim, being represented by Shahadat Awan advocate, was booked in as many as 20 cases. He was acquitted in eight cases and granted bail in rest of the 12 cases.

Guddu Bihari was initially arrested in late February by the Anti-corruption Establishment. He was booked in five different cases since his arrest. Subsequently, he got bail in all cases. However, the police arrested him immediately after he was ordered to be released on bail.

His mother, Arisha Bano, sent telegrams to the Sindh High Court and other authorities seeking help for the release of her son.

An additional district and sessions court granted bail to the Orangi Town Nazim in four different cases in the sum of Rs20,000 each. The cases, registered by the Pakistan Bazaar police station, pertained to violent activities, shootout with police and arsoning in Orangi Town.

Shahid Alam, better known as Guddu Bihari, was arrested on Feb 19 by the Anti-corruption Establishment for misappropriation of Rs10 million official funds. He, however, obtained bail in the case.

He has also been on an anticipatory bail from the district and sessions court West, since August 20, 2003, in a murder case. He was earlier granted interim pre-arrest bail on July 8, 2003, in the same case in the sum of Rs100,000.
