DACCA: Speaking on behalf of the Opposition and independent members in the NA political debate, in a hard-hitting 100-minute speech, the Leader of the Opposition, Mr Nurul Amin, held the Government squarely responsible for the present situation resulting in the loss of lives including the lives of a few promising students [Jan 31].

The present situation, Mr Nurul Amin said, was the result of the accumulated frustration of the people during the last ten years.

The Leader of the Opposition told the House that the Opposition always stood for a non-violent and peaceful movement and would continue their movement till the demands of the people were met.

He urged the Government to understand the gravity of the situation and follow a new philosophy by discarding its present philosophy. He warned that the country was almost on the brink of ruin and unless the Government realised the gravity of the situation and accepted the demands of the people, which he termed as reasonable, grave consequences might follow and the Government would be responsible for such a situation.

The people of both the wings of the country were today one and the policy of “divide and rule” would not work. — Correspondent
