DACCA: Mr Nurul Amin, Leader of the Opposition in the National Assembly, has called upon the Government to tackle the current situation with sanity, understanding and foresight. In a statement released here last night [Jan 25], Mr Nurul Amin said:

“The atrocities perpetrated on the students in Dacca for the last few days by the Police and EPR culminating in the loss of valuable lives which has reached its zenith on Saturday with the killing of eight persons including students in Dacca, Mymensingh and Chittagong deserve strongest and universal condemnation. The statement of the Vice Chancellor of Dacca University leaves no room for doubt that the EPR and the police gave highest provocation to the students which is responsible for the deterioration of the situation. My deepest sympathy goes to the members of the bereaved families.”

He said he was also grieved to note that unnecessary firing had been taken recourse to in several places of Dacca today causing loss of many, valuable lives and injuries to quite a number of people. This had caused considerable resentment amongst the people. “I urge upon the Government to tackle the situation with sanity, understanding and foresight,” he said. — Agency
