JESSORE: The former Chief Justice of East Pakistan High Court, Mr Justice Syed Mahbub Murshed, today [Jan 18] criticised the police excesses in Dacca yesterday where he said police went all out to beat and stone the students mercilessly within the Dacca University campus. He was addressing a largely attended meeting at the Jessore Bar Association this afternoon.

Mr Murshed said that police in no civilised country can tear [up] the peaceful assembly of students within the University in such a brutal manner. In this connection, he warned the public servants not to repress the public opinion and urged upon them not to play the tools in the hands of party in power.

Justice Murshed condemned the so-called Decade of Reforms by the present regime and termed the post Martial Law era as “Decade of Cancer”. Amidst loud cheers, Mr Murshed said that due to the repressive measures in the country the entire nation from Torkham to Teknaf had been united under the banner of [the] united movement of opposition parties.

Justice Murshed demanded the release of all political prisoners, Press freedom and restoration of democracy.
