LARKANA: The vice chancellor (VC) of Shaheed Mohtarma Benazir Bhutto Medical University (SMBBMU) has demanded giving Chandka Medical College Hospital in the administrative control of the university as dual administration would spoil the institution.

Prof Dr Aneela Atta-ur-Rehman said that despite billions of rupees budget, beds in the CMC hospital were filled with cockroaches. Seniors working in the hospital were feeling insecure even to the extent that relatives of patients time and again had beaten duty doctors, she added.

She was addressing a press conference here at Chandka Medical College on Wednesday where she unveiled the programme of holding a two-day international conference titled ‘Health and awareness about it’ on Jan 18 and 19.

Almost all universities, including SMBBMU, were facing financial issues, but “we [want] to streamline the matters by observing rules”, she said.

However, she said some “ladlas” [favourites] were defying the rules and added that they would learn soon. “I don’t have anything personal with anyone here in the university,” she said, but in the same breath added that the retired employees in the light of Supreme Court’s directives would be shunted out.

She said the university’s registrar was also a retired employee; therefore, soon advertisements would be placed in papers for appointing a regular person for the slot. Some retired professors would also be fired, she said. “We are sending a list of the retired employees to the Sindh government.”

Referring to the university employees’ recent strike demanding leave encashment facility, she said it was in toto against the Supreme Court’s verdict. “I can’t do this,” she said in categorical terms and termed this demand of university employees’ association uncalled for and illegal.

She said that soon new recruitment would be made in the university through selection board and transparency would be observed. She said arrangements were being made for removing encroachments from the university. It seemed as if village after village had migrated and settled there, she commented.

Prof Dr Hakim Abro, dean faculty of medicine and allied sciences, severely criticised the medical superintendent (MS) of Chandka Medical College and accused him of misguiding both the administration and media.

He alleged that MS was not even providing sanitation material and claimed spending Rs80,000 per month on his ward alone. Professors were unnecessarily criticised for not attending the wards, he said.

“Actually we are employees of the college and university and visiting wards only on humanitarian grounds,” he said.

Conference

Briefing about the two-day international conference, she said that for the first time, the medicine and allied sciences department was itself making all arrangements.

It spreads over six workshops covering the issues relating to paediatrics, cardiology, medicine, neurology and other subjects where renowned experts from all over the country in their fields would share their experiences in the conference. Flanked by Prof Dr Saifullah Jamro, Prof Dr Hakim Abro, conference secretary Prof Dr Manzoor Phulpoto, she said three scientific sessions would also be part of the conference.
