LAHORE: An exhibition of artworks featuring traditional and contemporary calligraphy opened at Alhamra Art Centre, The Mall, on Monday.

The exhibition was organised by the Calligraphers Association of Pakistan and inaugurated by Minister for Information and Culture Fayyazul Hassan Chohan.

“Calligraphy is the most powerful art form for highlighting the brilliance of the written word with illumination. This form dates back to thousands of years and artists have managed to bring innovation in this form of art with the passage of time which is very much visible in this exhibition,” said Lahore Arts Council Assistant Director (Fine Arts) Mina Haroon.

The art show included works of traditional and contemporary calligraphy in various styles and scripts from all over Pakistan. More than 200 artworks created by 70 artists were displayed at the gallery which included works in various mediums including mixed media, pen and ink, oil on canvas, acrylic on canvas, drawings and reliefs.

The minister appreciated the efforts of artists and organisers for arranging the exhibition to promote calligraphy art.

Artists have managed to give a diverse and unique experience to the viewers through the exhibition. Such shows aspire to bring more opportunities for local calligraphers of other cities to get their skills recognised and appreciated.

Pakistan’s national script Nastaliq Lahori waslis were also displayed in the exhibition created by Khalid Mehmood Siddique.

A number of art fanciers and students from different institutes came to see the exhibition which will continue till Jan 10.
