SUKKUR: Misuse of funds to be checked

Published January 12, 2002

SUKKUR, Jan 11: The Sindh governor, Mohammedmian Soomro, underlined the need of mobilizing national resources in order to meet the imminent danger of war on our borders, and added that the country’s defence was supreme and it was the duty of all to contribute efforts to strengthen it.

He was addressing the Nazims and officers of Sukkur, Rohri, Pano Aqil and Salehpat Talukas at the Public School auditorium, Sukkur, on Friday.

He referred to the financial problems presented by the Zila Nazim including roads and drainage, and announced a special grant of Rs45 million. He asked the district administration to keep a check on its use, so that it was not wasted and did not fall prey to commissions and pilferage.

He claimed that jobs in the police and education departments would soon be filled on merit and there would be no quota.

He said business-friendly policies were being pursued by the government for attracting investment in rural and urban areas.

Mr Soomro said that the Khushhali Bank branches would be established to provide loans of Rs10,000 to Rs50,000 to jobless people.

He asked the councillors and Nazims to serve the people devotedly without any discrimination. He said the district governments were all powerful and could impose taxes to generate income.

Mr Soomro was accompanied by the chief secretary, Sindh, Javed Ashraf Hussain, and the local government secretary, Qamar Zaman.
