KARACHI, Jan 11: A minibus was set on fire by enraged youths after it knocked down a woman in Nazimabad on Friday.
According to the area police, a speeding minibus of route No. C-4 (JE-2307) knocked down Rehmat Bibi, 45, on Ibne Sina Road. The woman died on the spot.
Following the accident, enraged people set the minibus on fire. The vehicle had been partially gutted by the time firefighters arrived and extinguished the fire.
The driver of the minibus, Mohammad Aslam Khan, 30, was caught by the people and handed over to the police. The mob pelted some vehicles with stones.
On Thursday, a bus was set ablaze by the area people after a schoolgirl died and two others were injured in a road accident.
Meanwhile, four-year-old Abdullah was crushed to death by a speeding truck (QA-9261) near Lasi Goth in Gulzar-i-Hijri.
The truck driver escaped from the scene, leaving behind the vehicle.
The boy was going to his Madressah when the truck ran over him. His body was taken to the Abbasi Shaheed Hospital for a post-mortem examination.
INFANT DROWNS: An infant died by drowning in his house in Liaquatabad on Friday.
Police said one-year-old Fahad had been crawling in the courtyard of the house when he had dipped into a bucket and drowned.
He was taken to the Abbasi Shaheed Hospital, where he was pronounced dead by the medico-legal officer.
STABBED TO DEATH: A young man was stabbed to death in Chakiwara on Friday.
Aijaz, 22, was sitting outside his house when some people came there and, after an exchange of hot words, attacked him with a knife repeatedly. The youth died on the spot.
The motive behind the murder could not be ascertained by the police immediately.
KILLED: A cattle pen owner was killed and robbed of cash by bandits in his cattle pen in Malir late on Thursday night.
Six bandits barged into the cattle pen of Ali Asghar, 55, held the staff hostage and looted cash.
As they were escaping from the cattle pen, Asghar raised alarm. The bandits became jittery and opened fire, wounding him seriously. He was shifted to the JPMC, where he died.
GUTTED: A cargo-bogie of the Bolan Mail caught fire near Gaggar Patakh on Friday.
The bogie (F-5747), carrying motorcycles, refrigerators, fish crates and newspaper consignments, was gutted. It was detached from the train, which was allowed to proceed to its destination.
Spokesman for the fire department said that cause of the fire could not be known immediately.
CARJACKINGS: At least 12 vehicles, four cars and eight motorcycles, were either hijacked or stolen from different parts of the city on Friday, police said.
The cars — (PL-2805) Clifton, (ADK-518) Gizri, (KG-9438) Model Colony, (PL-9916) New Karachi — were hijacked by the bandits. The motorcycles — (KCM-4156) Garden, (MPS-2550) Risala, (KCC-8728) Preedy, (KAV-1734) Bagdadi, (KAQ-1275) Aziz Bhatti, (KAR-8565) Landhi, (KCS-856) New Town and (BNT-5293) F. B. Area —were either hijacked or stolen.
