KARACHI, Jan 11: The Atchison College, Lahore, was declared the best team of the four-day International School Educational Olympiad 2002 which concluded here after a colourful prize distribution ceremony on Friday.

The smart and talented group of over two dozen students and teachers managed to win the first positions in quiz, art (senior), drama and webpage presentation and the second position in filmmaking, thus securing a maximum of 23 points. In addition to a trophy, merit certificates and other prizes, the Atchison College was also given a Pentium-4 computer by Intel Pakistan Corporation, which was the main sponsor of the Olympiad.

The jubilant winners of different events were given a big hand by the participants of the Olympiad and guests belonging to various walks of life. Then a couple of classical songs and dances were presented by Karachi High School choir under the supervision of Safia Beg and Zohra Umer.

The overall second and third positions of the Olympiad went to St Patrick’s High School (18 points) and The Lyceum School (10 points) respectively. The St Pats students bagged first position in debate and filmmaking and third prize in story writing, drama, panel discussion and model display events, while The Lyceum students won second prize in debate and model display and third prize in panel discussion and webpage presentation events.

The prizes were given away to successful individuals and teams by Shoaib Hashmi, British Council Director Charlie Walker, Arshad Mahmood, Musaddaq, Arsalan Khan, Zahra Shahid, Masood Haider of Daily Dawn and Naila Kassim of Intel. In her concluding notes, the chairperson of ISEO-2002, Parveen Kassim, appreciated the educational institutions for sending entries for different events of the Olympiad and also thanked the sponsors, including Dawn, for extending support to the show.

An exclusive event — panel discussion — for teachers or team leaders was held for the first time in the Olympiad this year. Qurat-ul-ain of Foundation Public School Sr-II was adjudged the first prize winner of the event, while Sadia Illahi of Frobel’s Education Centre got second prize and Gervase Pecus of St Patrick’s School and Shireen Syed Khan of The Lyceum were given third prizes of the event.
