THE federal and provincial governments must ensure a good education at reasonable cost to all citizens if it is serious about ensuring Pakistan joins the rank of nations that are peaceful and prosperous.
In all advanced countries it is the public sector education that is mainly responsible for educating it citizenry. The higher the education level, the stronger is that nation’s economy. Two countries that stand out in this respect are Germany and Japan. We should learn from their experience.
When Pakistan became independent, education was the state’s responsibility, and those public schools — popularly known as peela schools — produced alumni which became top-notch doctors, teachers, bureaucrats and soldiers.
This government should re-establish the academic excellence that once prevailed in these public sector schools. Affordable quality education will go a long way in creating a new and strong Pakistan.
