KARACHI, Jan 11: Renowned artist and social worker, Jimmy Engineer, has said that his “solo peace walk” has not been cancelled, it has just been postponed and will be resumed soon.
Speaking at a press conference here on Friday, Jimmy said he would resume the peace walk from the Wagah border to New Delhi as soon as relations between the two countries normalized.
In reply to a question, he said he did not have the Indian visa, about which his “well connected” sponsors of the walk had promised that it would be obtained within half-an-hour.
In Lahore, he had given his passport to the sponsors for the visa and it was being processed. But in the meantime, he said, relations became so tense that the visa process had to be stopped.
He said he had started his peace walk to create an atmosphere of peace and to spread the message of love among the peoples of both the countries.
“Neither Pakistanis nor the majority of the Indians want war. Poverty is rampant in the region and it can only be countered if peace prevailed in the region,” he maintained.
He said he postponed the walk after receiving a message from his Indian sponsors that atmosphere was not conducive for him to continue the walk on the Indian side as the Indians were not in a mood to hear about peace.
Jimmy said he was not staging a media show, nor was trying to get the western media’s attention like some other people.
He announced to donate a transparency of his painting on the subject of partition that would be displayed at the Pakistani side of the border.
