APROPOS the article ‘Where is academia?’ (Nov 25). The writer has rightly highlighted the weakness of the academics and said they had abandoned their role — social reform, intellectual grooming, personality development, and very importantly scientific progress.

The academia is the trendsetter for any society, more so ours. Unfortunately, it has not been able to fulfill this role in the manner it should have. Most faculty members’ objectives is not to promote quality education and research, but personal aggrandisement.

The academics need to be honest to their profession and ethically and educationally sound so that their product may have a positive impact on society.
