Akshay Kumar's space movie Mission Mangal faces lawsuit

US based filmmaker filed the suit on terms of copyright infringement

Akshay Kumar and Vidya Balan's upcoming space movie Mission Mangal lands in controversy before it even hit floors.

Midday reports that US based filmmaker Radha Bharadwaj has filed a lawsuit halting the production and release of the film.

Kumar had revealed the project a week ago on his Twitter, calling it "A powerful true story of ordinary people with extraordinary dreams, on an unheard of mission to achieve the impossible."

The film was planned to be 2019's Independence Day release and also has Sonakshi Sinha, Taapsee Pannu, Sharman Joshi, Kirti Kulhari and Nithya Menen in the cast.

Radha Bharadwaj alleges that the production infringes on the copyright of her original screenplay that she had shared with Atul Kasbekar in 2016. She claims that Kasberkar's studio shared the script with Vidya Balan, who took the idea for Mission Mangal.

Said Bharadwaj, "I'll bet the details of the origin of this project were not known to Akshay Kumar, Fox Star or its US partners. But now that they know it, I ask them to act honourably. I have documentation going back to 2014 on my efforts to bring this story to screen."

She added, "That they are scrambling to catch up with me seems to be an acknowledgement that their project is the same as mine. They seem to think that rushing their film into production will discourage any distributor from releasing my film."

Bharadwaj's script, titled Space MOMs, revolves around the women engineers who worked on Mission Mangal.

The team behind Mission Mangal has yet to comment on the matter.

Bollywood movie plots are usually borrowed. They don't even bother modifying it to the slightest. No surprises there.
