ABBOTTABAD: The Ayub Teaching Hospital, Abbottabad, claims to be the first hospital in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa to have inducted paediatric nephrologist in the paediatric department to deal with the kidney problems of children from birth till 16 years of age.

Dr Syed Sajid is the first paediatrician having qualified FCPS in paediatric nephrology in Pakistan and has been appointed in the hospital as assistant professor. He has expertise not only in the field of paediatric nephrology but also in paediatric medicine.

Dr Sajid has started treating kidney diseases in children at the outpatient department of the hospital on Thursdays and Saturdays.

Children with chronic kidney diseases requiring dialysis or kidney transplant have a high mortality rate which also severely impacts their quality of life.

Dr Sajid told mediapersons that beside the normal treatment of kidney patients, kidney transplant would also be done. He said the KP government had formed human organ transplant authority and renal transplant had been started in adult patients.

He showed his interest in starting paediatric renal transplant in the province, but said for such a task efforts were required at the government level to develop the specialty for the benefit of people.
