KARACHI, June 20: City Nazim Niamatullah Khan on Monday laid the foundation stone of Karachi’s first chest pain centre in Model Colony, Malir Town. It will serve as a crisis centre for heart patients to be provided with immediate medical aid and 10 such centres would be set up in the city for which locations had been identified by the city government.
The nazim said that with reference to Khidmat-i-Khalq, this was the major project of his life and four-year-old city government. He said the newly constructed Karachi Institute of Heart Diseases and establishment of 10 chest pain centres would prove historical works in health sector in Karachi.
Niamatullah Khan said that at these centres nominal charges would be received from the poor and deserving patients or if need felt, they would be provided free treatment. He said preferably all chest pain centres would be established in the city’s outskirts.
MAGNETIC TRAIN: City Nazim Niamatullah Khan said that the feasibility of the magnate train under Mass Transit Programme was ready.
Addressing at the inauguration of Shahrah-i-Khuwaja Ghareeb Nawaz and Shahrah-i-Jamia Masijd Aqsa in Gulberg Town on Sunday night, he said that both the roads had been completed with a cost of Rs1.2 million. He said that all roads and streets of Block-19 had also been constructed.
The nazim said that the city government had completed a record number of projects in a very short time. He said that the previous administrations could have initiated these projects if they wanted, but they failed to do so. He said that the K-3 project would be completed by July 2006 and it would result in supplying additional 100 million gallons of water daily for Karachiites from the River Indus and help in ending the water shortage.
Niamatullah Khan said that not a single rupee of the city government was spent on the desalination and sewerage water re-use projects. He said that they had not shattered the confidence of Karachiites and it would also help them in sweeping next local bodies’ polls.
Gulberg Town Nazim Farooq Niamatullah, Muslim Pervez and Muhammad Iqbal also spoke on the occasion.
AGREEMENT SIGNED: City Nazim Niamatullah Khan on Monday said that the city government had reached an agreement with a foreign company to establish a desalination plant in Karachi and company would sale 50 million gallon water to city, all expenses of the plant would be born by company.
After inaugurating water supply scheme for Bukhar Goth, Sikander Goth, Bhitaiabad and Ali Town, Gulshan-i-Iqbal, he said that there was always shortage of water in the city due to increasing population, while supply of water was not increasing according to demand.
“The government has awarded contract for a desalination project of 100 million gallon water, which will be completed in June 2006. In second phase, sewage water will be treated and reused in industries, for this an agreement has also signed with a company,” he said.
The nazim said if katchi abadies were not existed in city, it would not witness such development, as these slums provided labour to work on development projects like roads and flyovers. “So, first they have the right on Karachi. We have decided to provide lease to residents of katchi abadies on their doorsteps. They should be provided with all necessities of life. We have also reduced lease fee for katchi abadies and now owner of 120-yards plot can get lease in just Rs3,000,” he maintained.
MNA Asadullah Bhutto, MPA Younus Barai, Usama Razi, Gulshan-i-Iqbal Town Nazim Mohammad Abdul Wahab, Muzzafar Iqbal, Sikander Ali Baloch, Asghar Gabol, Roadad Khan and Muslim Pervez were also present on the occasion.
Korangi flyover: City Nazim Niamatullah Khan on Monday asked the officials concerned to expedite the construction work on flyover linking Korangi to Shah Faisal Colony.
After visiting the site, the nazim held meeting with officials and inquired about the pace of construction work. He was apprised that the project would be completed in two years with a cost of Rs1,050 million and it would facilitate citizens to approach Korangi from Sharea Faisal via Shah Faisal Colony, which would save their time and money.
The flyover will be 1.3-km-long and 80-feet-wide with provision of space of five feet for footpath on both sides and three feet space for central reservation between the two ways.
LIGHTS INSTALLED: City Nazim Niamatullah Khan inaugurated the newly installed lights at Buhadarabad Chowrangi here on Sunday night.
Speaking on the occasion, he said that Karachi had once again been made a city of lights. He said the development and peace in Karachi could guarantee peace and development of the whole country and it was for this reason that the president was taking personal interest in reconstruction of its infrastructure.
He said it was his personal interest that Karachi was given a development package of Rs29 billion.
Niamatullah Khan said that it was his earnest desire to make Karachi a model city and he was confident about fulfilment of his desire during his tenure. He said he had decided not to contest the forthcoming local bodies elections because of his health and age, but on the demand of people of Karachi and keeping the obtaining conditions in view he decided to participate in the elections.
He said that he did not need to launch his election campaign because his works would serve as an election campaign for him and the conscious people of Karachi would make him and his team successful in the coming elections so that the schemes which were halfway could see completion.
Gulshan Town Nazim Abdul Wahab said that during the time of DMCs, their budget used to be around Rs120 million which had now been taken to the level of Rs1.05 billion without imposing any tax. The function was also addressed by Senior Presiding Officer Muslim Pervez and others.—Agencies
