KARACHI, June 17: After meetings with high-ups at the Governor’s House and others at the helm of security affairs, the administration of the Federal Urdu University of Arts, Science and Technology, has announced that academic activities at its Gulshan-i-Iqbal campus will resume on June 20.

A university notification said that classes and BA (Private) annual examinations would be conducted as per schedule from Monday.

While dates for the papers, which couldn’t be held due to resentment by university teachers over alleged manhandling of their colleagues by a group of students on June 14 would be given later.

Sources on campus said that the varsity’s Vice-Chancellor, Dr Iqbal Mohsin, along with Registrar Abdul Alim and president of the teachers’ society (Gulshan campus) Syed Asghar Ali met the Principal Secretary to Governor, Brig Akhtar Zamin, and apprised him about the critical law and order situation.

It was learnt that the FUU delegation was told that security arrangements would be enhanced and loopholes would be sorted out with the support of the Rangers.

Varsity authorities had a detail discussion with the DG Rangers on Friday as well. It was likely that the CCPO would also be asked for security assistance on the campus.

From Monday onwards, Rangers personnel would check every person entering the Science campus, and students and teachers would have to prove their identity.

According to sources, efforts would also be made for patch-ups between the APMSO and the PkSF with the help of government high-ups. The PkSF has been for long raising concern over lack of measures for arresting the killers of one of its activists.

In the meantime, teaching activities remained suspended on Friday for the third successive day at the Gulshan campus.

Teachers at the Gulshan campus had boycotted teaching and related activities demanding action against unruly elements, who had manhandled some teachers on Tuesday last.

It was likely that the teacher’s body would review the situation on Saturday and call off its strike.

The VC has already constituted a committee to probe into Tuesday last’s incident.

The committee is likely to meet on Saturday and nominate students involved in the hooliganism, so that disciplinary action, including rustication, could be taken against them forthwith, it was further learnt.

According to teacher representatives, five students nominated in the FIR for Tuesday’s incident included one student of the varsity.

Talking to Dawn, the VC, Dr Iqbal Mohsin, expressed hope that conditions would normalize on the campus from Monday and teachers would resume their duties.

He said in addition to Rangers, the varsity would be developing its own small security units, under a campus officer, who would be appointed in the shortest possible time.

The campus officers could be retired senior services officers, he pointed out.
