THATTA: The World Wide Fund for Nature-Pakistan (WWF-P) in collaboration with the Titans Autographs and Memorabilia (TAM) have initiated a project for the setting up of 91 water filtration plants in less privileged areas of Sindh.
In the first phase of the project 91 sustainable water facilities would be built/improved.
Speaking at a ceremony held here on Tuesday for the launch of the initiative with the start of work on two such plants — in Sonehri and Abdullah Ghandro villages, located near Keenjhar Lake — officers and activists of the two organisations observed that pollution, dams, overuse of water resources, climate change and other factors had made freshwater habitats and species more vulnerable to extinction. “We need to ensure that everyone has access to safe drinking water across the province,” they said.
WWF-P regional head for Sindh and Balochistan Dr Babar Khan said that issues of water scarcity and poor water quality had cast an adverse impact on public health and environment. He noted that children in many areas of Sindh, particularly Tharparkar and coastal districts, suffered from water-borne diseases.
TAM president Yousif Amanullah also spoke.
