KARACHI: An accountability court on Saturday issued non-bailable warrant for the arrest of former federal minister for ports and shipping and Muttahida Qaumi Movement-Pakistan (MQM-P) leader Babar Ghauri in a reference pertaining to Rs2.8 billion corruption in the Karachi Port Trust (KPT).
The National Accountability Bureau filed a reference against eight suspects, including Babar Ghauri, the then chairman of the KPT Javed Hanif, Rauf Akhtar Farooqui and others for allegedly illegally regularising 940 employees of the KPT, causing losses to the tune of Rs2.8bn to the national exchequer.
On Saturday, the matter came up before the accountability court-II judge Aaliya Latif Unar for hearing.
Last week, the court had issued bailable warrant for the arrest of Babar Ghauri since the federal anti-graft watchdog showed him absconder in the reference.
Therefore, the court issued non-bailable warrant for the arrest of the absconding former minister and directed the IO to arrest him and produce before the court on October 17.
