KRL cruise to two-day win

KARACHI: After their first-round Quaid-i-Azam Trophy National Cricket Championship loss to Peshawar last week, Khan Research Laboratories (KRL) completed a two-day victory by 10 wickets against Islamabad at the Diamond Club Ground on Sunday.

After extending their overnight total of 126-6 to 176 all out while taking a handy 88-run lead on the first innings, KRL dismissed the regional out for 118 with seamer Ali Shafiq taking 5-42.

Left with just a small chase for 31, KRL got home unscathed to claim nine points while leaving Islamabad smarting from second straight defeat.

Out-of-favour Pakistan batsman Iftikhar Ahmed sent yet another strong message to the national selectors by converting his Saturday’s score of 94 to 145 (175 balls, 19 fours and one six) to guide holders SNGPL to 461-8 declared against Fata at the Abbottabad Cricket Stadium in Abbottabad.

Iftikhar nudges selectors with 145

Former Test wicket-keeper Adnan Akmal contributed 53 in the sixth-wicket partnership of 116 with Iftikhar.

Fata made a spirited response by reaching 144-3 at draw of stumps.

Ex-international Awais Zia banged 108 (164 balls, 16 boundaries) to put SSGCL in a strong position against Karachi Whites here at the National Stadium where the departmental side collected 276-4 after the hosts were all out for 338.

ZTBL were heading for a probable defeat after they were shot out for a measly 71 in their second innings by Rawalpindi on a repeat of day one when 16 wickets fell at the Pindi Cricket Stadium.

Rawalpindi, who were 53-6 on Saturday, recovered partially to make 115 in response to ZTBL’s first-innings total of 173.

Chasing only 129, Rawalpindi had advanced to 48-2 at close of play.

Skipper Salman But struck 68 in a first-wicket stand of 145 with Adnan Raees (65 not out) as Wapda posted 156-1 after dismissing Multan for 290 at the Multan Cricket Stadium.

The HBL-Peshawar fixture at the KRL Stadium in Rawalpindi was intriguingly poised after the bankers collapsed like ninepins for a disappointing 122 after obtaining a marginal lead of 35.

Peshawar, who were left with a modest target of 158, Peshawar will resume Monday’s day three at 19-1.

Lahore Blues moved to 182-5 on a truncated day at the Iqbal Stadium in Faisalabad while replying to PTV’s 261, while Lahore Whites are tottering at 18-3 — with all wickets captured by lanky speedster Ataullah — after NBP added 52 to their overnight 221-5 to be bowled out for 273 at the LCCA Ground in Lahore.
