CHAKWAL: Two poachers who shot dead an endangered urial were arrested by Wildlife Department, sources in Wildlife Department revealed to Dawn on Friday.

The killed urial and a gun were also recovered from the poachers who were slapped with a fine of Rs110,000.

In a tip off a team of Wildlife Department led by District Wildlife Officer Khalid Hassan Sahi caught the poachers hunting in a thick jungle near Ara village in Jhangar Valley of Salt Range.

After killing the urial, both poachers went into hiding.

“They were arrested after strenuous efforts,” Khalid Sahi told Dawn. He said both poachers killed a male urial which had 26-inch long horns.

Salt Range is the sole habitat of endangered Punjab urial which is protected under Punjab Wildlife Act.
